Nevada’s 2025 Legislative Session: 10 Key Issues to Keep an Eye On

Nevada’s 83rd legislative session begins this week in Carson City, marking the start of a 120-day period where proposed laws will be discussed, debated, and potentially signed into law. Education funding, housing, criminal justice, healthcare, immigrant communities, and more are expected to be hot topics during the session.

Governor Joe Lombardo and Democratic legislative leaders are focused on renewing raises for educators, expanding pre-K programs, and addressing school choice issues. Healthcare bills will include measures on mental health, improving care coordination for youth, and affordable services for people with disabilities. Housing proposals aim to address the state’s housing crisis through permitting changes, rent caps, and measures to prevent corporate purchases of homes.

On the criminal justice front, there are proposals to increase penalties for repeat offenders and prohibit diversion courts for certain crimes. In terms of elections, reforms are being discussed, including mail ballot deadlines and criminalizing fake elector schemes. Economic development, environment, energy, gaming, tourism, immigrant communities, and cannabis are also key areas of focus in this year’s legislative session.
