Former UFC star Ronda Rousey has issued a detailed apology for previously engaging in Sandy Hook school shooting denialism. During a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, Rousey faced criticism for spreading misinformation about the 2012 attack in Newtown, Connecticut that killed 20 schoolchildren. In her statement, Rousey called reposting a conspiracy theory video about Sandy Hook in 2013 the “single most regrettable decision” of her life. She expressed remorse at causing hurt and insult and acknowledged the damage done by her actions. Rousey revealed that she had drafted and redrafted her apology multiple times, fearing drawing attention to lies about the mass murder. She also disclosed that her publisher advised against including a longer apology in her memoir for fear of it being detrimental. Rousey’s statement expressed deep regret for contributing to the pain of those affected by the Sandy Hook massacre and vowed to continue regretting her actions. The video she reposted was part of a wave of far-right conspiracy theories claiming the Sandy Hook killings were a hoax. Despite the controversy, Rousey remains known for her MMA career and achievements, including becoming the UFC’s inaugural women’s bantamweight champion. After her retirement from the UFC, Rousey transitioned to World Wrestling Entertainment and has also pursued opportunities in film and television.
