One Fatality, Six Injured in Shooting at Elizabeth City State University

A shooting at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina resulted in one fatality and six injuries, leading to a campus lockdown early Sunday. The incident occurred in the university’s central area following Yard Fest, the culminating event of the weeklong Viking Fest celebration. A 24-year-old man, not affiliated with the university, was pronounced dead, with his identity withheld pending family notification. Among the injured, four individuals sustained gunshot wounds—three of whom were students—while two others were hurt during the chaos. Fortunately, none of the injuries were deemed life-threatening, and all victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The university expressed deep sadness over the “senseless act” in an official statement. Following the shooting, officials enforced a lockdown to ensure safety, which was later lifted, though access to certain areas of the campus remained restricted as a precaution. Increased police patrols around the campus were implemented to maintain security.

Elizabeth City State University, a historically Black institution, serves approximately 2,300 students and is situated around 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia. The university community was shaken by the event, highlighting concerns over campus safety amid tragic circumstances. The incident underscores the ongoing issues surrounding gun violence and its impact on educational institutions, prompting discussions about preventive measures and the need for support within the affected communities.
