State lawmakers in Nevada are currently debating a bill that could make DUI punishments stricter in response to the devastating impact of deadly DUI crashes on valley roadways. Local advocates Robin Wynkoop and Sandy Heverly are in favor of the bill, which aims to eliminate the requirement for three prior DUI convictions for a vehicular homicide charge. Instead, first-time DUI offenders who cause a deadly crash could face this charge.
The bill has already passed out of committee, with many DUI victim families and advocates speaking in support of it. However, there are some who disagree with the changes, stating that one-time offenders should not face such harsh penalties. Heverly, from the nonprofit STOP DUI, believes that tough laws, along with victim support and education, can help reduce DUI offenses, crashes, and deaths in the valley.
Overall, many locals are hopeful that more laws will be enacted to increase safety and protect drivers on the roadways in Nevada.
