France’s justice minister, Gerald Darmanin, stated that recent gun and arson attacks on several prisons in the country were acts of terrorism aimed at security officials guarding prominent criminals. It is unclear if the attacks are linked to the government’s efforts to combat the growing drug trade, but Darmanin emphasized that authorities are cracking down on imprisoned gangsters. Despite record cocaine seizures in France, drug gangs are expanding into new areas, fueling violence.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office has taken charge of the investigation into the attacks, which also targeted the National School of Prison Administration. The attacks were coordinated and intended to disrupt public order. The use of the acronym “DDPF” at the attack sites raised suspicions of involvement by a far-left militant group, although no group has claimed responsibility.
Darmanin likened the attacks to criminal contracts to harm officials, rather than rival gang members. The rise in gang crime has bolstered support for the far-right National Rally party in France. Darmanin has proposed measures to enhance prison security, including the construction of high-security facilities for top criminals. Additionally, a new anti-drug trafficking law is pending approval, which would grant more power to police investigating drug gangs.
The capture of high-profile fugitive Mohamed Amra, also known as “The Fly,” in February marked a success for authorities. His escape from custody resulted in the deaths of two prison guards. Darmanin and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau have vowed to increase protection for prison staff and facilities in response to the attacks.
