Legislature ends Nevada lottery proposal | Nevada | News

An attempt to establish a Nevada Lottery has failed to gain traction in the state’s Legislature, as Assembly Joint Resolution 5 did not receive a hearing before its deadline. The resolution aimed to remove the state’s prohibition on state lotteries, a provision that has been in place since 1864. Despite strong support from organizations like Culinary Local 226 and approval from the public, lawmakers ultimately decided not to move forward with the proposal.

Nevada is one of five states without a statewide lottery, and the decision not to establish one has been seen as a victory for the state’s gaming industry. The Nevada Resort Association praised the lawmakers’ choice, highlighting the industry’s significant economic impact and the large number of jobs it supports.

Speaker Steve Yeager cited economic uncertainty and concerns about funding for education and mental health as reasons for not moving forward with the lottery. Culinary Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge criticized the decision, calling it irresponsible and urging lawmakers to find solutions for the state’s budget shortfalls.

The failure of AJR 5 means that Nevada will continue to rely on multistate games like Powerball and MegaMillions for lottery revenue. The debate over whether to establish a state lottery is likely to continue in the future, as supporters and opponents of the proposal make their case for or against the potential benefits and drawbacks of such a system.
