Nevada removes 162,000 inactive voters during roll cleanup

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar announced that over 162,000 voter registrations were canceled and nearly 38,000 were inactivated in a post-general election voter roll cleanup. The state’s 17 counties have been working on cleaning up the voter rolls by sending notices to registered voters to confirm or update their addresses. Inactive voters are those with potentially invalid addresses, while canceled voters are those who do not respond and do not vote in two federal general elections in a row.

Clark County canceled over 135,000 voter registrations, inactivated over 34,000, and sent out over 35,000 notices as part of the cleanup process. The goal is to maintain accurate and up-to-date voter registration databases in line with state and federal laws like the National Voter Registration Act.

Efforts to update voter registration systems have increased in the wake of claims of widespread voter fraud following the 2020 election. However, election officials maintain that recent elections have been secure and there is no evidence of widespread fraud. Critics, like Chuck Muth of Citizen Outreach, argue that the process does not go far enough in purging fraudulent voters from the rolls and are concerned about a proposed definition of “personal knowledge” in the Secretary of State Office’s omnibus election bill, Assembly Bill 534.

Muth believes that the proposed definition could hinder challengers from participating in the cleaning up of voting rolls, as it limits the type of information that can be used in the challenging process.
