NIAA Hall of Fame Class of 11 includes only one member from Northern Nevada


The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s Hall of Fame will induct a class of 11 members in June, with a predominantly Southern Nevada representation. Of the 11 inductees, 10 hail from Southern Nevada, celebrating their contributions to high school sports in the state. The class includes individuals such as veteran football official Jim Cavin, successful baseball coach Mike Gomez, multi-sport athlete Gary Hickman, record-setting basketball coach Amy Huntsman, and accomplished swimming and diving official Rick Kaufmann, among others. The NIAA’s executive director, Timothy Jackson, expressed his pleasure in honoring the class for their significant impact on student-athletes in Nevada.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for June 26 at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, where the inductees will be celebrated for their accomplishments. Each inductee has a unique background and has made noteworthy contributions to Nevada’s high school sports scene. The honorees include coaches, officials, and administrators who have left a lasting legacy in their respective fields.

Among the inductees are individuals like Marc Ratner, who had a more than 50-year officiating career and Rick Phillips, who had a successful tenure as a basketball and football coach. Gertha Robertson, a long-time athletic director, and Yvonne Torres-Arguello, a versatile coach and official, embody the diverse talents recognized by the NIAA. Brian Whitaker, a decorated baseball coach, rounds out the impressive class with his 562 career wins, including a state championship title. Overall, the 31st class of the NIAA Hall of Fame highlights the exceptional individuals who have made a lasting impact on high school sports in Nevada.
