Man mistakenly deported is alive and being detained in El Salvador, according to Trump administration

The Trump administration filed a late document stating that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, mistakenly deported to El Salvador, is alive and detained in a Terrorism Confinement Center. The administration was ordered by a Maryland-based judge to provide daily updates on his status and efforts to bring him back to the US following a Supreme Court ruling instructing his release. Although Trump initially suggested facilitating Abrego Garcia’s return, he later emphasized cooperation with El Salvador’s President Bukele to handle violent criminals. Abrego Garcia’s lawyers are seeking court action to ensure compliance with the order for his return and to hold the government accountable for its failure so far. The man, a legal resident mistakenly sent to El Salvador, is not an MS-13 gang member as claimed by the administration. The government had requested more time to provide information on his status and had previously admitted to an “administrative error” in sending him to El Salvador. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday to assess the government’s progress in bringing Abrego Garcia back to the US.
