The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology this weekend, enhancing the accuracy, speed, and efficiency of offside decision-making in live matches. The new system, developed in collaboration with PGMOL and Genius Sports, utilizes optical player tracking to provide more precise placement of the virtual offside line and create virtual graphics for fans and broadcasters.
Semi-automated offside technology works by automating key elements of the offside decision-making process for the video assistant referee (VAR), suggesting a “kick point” and creating offside lines on the second rear-most defender and relevant attacker. This saves time in determining whether a player is onside or offside and produces a visual report that is distributed to fans and media.
The technology uses up to 30 cameras mounted around Premier League stadiums to track player movements and capture up to 10,000 surface data points per player. While the system is semi-automated, VAR still confirms the decision and reviews the outcome to ensure accuracy.
The introduction of semi-automated offside technology is not expected to change the accuracy of offside calls but will make the process more efficient. Decision visuals will be displayed on screens in stadiums and shared on the Premier League Match Centre account, featuring a 3D virtual replay of relevant players with clear offside and onside indicators.
In most cases, the SAOT system will reduce delays caused by manual offside checks, providing quicker and more consistent decisions. While some delays may still occur in specific scenarios, the overall goal is to enhance the fan and broadcast experience and maintain the integrity of the competition.
