UCLA’s John Savage achieves 700th win, while Nevada softball captures sweep

Former Reno High alum John Savage reached a career milestone on Friday, securing his 700th victory as head coach of the UCLA baseball team. Savage, who also served as an assistant coach at Nevada from 1992-96, has been with the Bruins for 21 seasons and has led the team to three College World Series appearances, including a national title in 2013. After a tough season last year, UCLA is off to a strong start this year with a 25-6 record and is ranked 17th in the RPI.

In Nevada sports news, the softball team swept Fresno State in a key Mountain West series, moving them into a tie for first place in the conference. The Wolf Pack also avoided a sweep in baseball against UNLV, while the women’s tennis team defeated UNLV in a battle of second-place teams in the MW. Javelin thrower Lilly Urban set a new school record at the Stanford Invitational.

In a major milestone, Reno Aces standout Tim Tawa made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks, filling in for the injured Ketel Marte. Tawa, a former Stanford player drafted in the 11th round in 2021, had a solid debut performance, going 1-for-3 with a single, walk, and run scored. Tawa had a strong start to the season with the Aces, hitting .391 with three homers in just six games before his call-up to the majors.
