Transgender athletes banned from high school sports in Nevada by NIAA

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) has voted to ban transgender athletes from participating in high school sports in the state, aligning with a federal policy passed by President Donald Trump. This decision goes against the Equal Rights Amendment to the Nevada Constitution, which prohibits the denial of equal rights based on sex or gender expression. The new policy will require athletes to undergo a physical exam to determine their eligibility based on their birth sex, starting in fall 2025.

In other news, Nevada basketball alum Kobe Sanders will participate in the Reese’s Division I All-Star Game in San Antonio. Sanders, who played for Nevada after four seasons at Cal Poly, will be part of the West All-Stars team alongside other senior players from around the nation. The game will air live on CBS Sports Network on Friday.

Additionally, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is set to add women’s volleyball as its third varsity sport in 2026. This decision was approved by the Nevada Board of Regents and will allow TMCC to compete in the NJCAA Region XVIII. TMCC’s athletics director, Geoffrey Hawkins, sees the addition of women’s volleyball as a significant step forward for the college’s athletics program and aims to serve the volleyball community in the Reno-Sparks area.
