Steve Sisolak considers running for Nevada governor in 2026

Former Democratic Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak is considering running for governor again in 2026, as he eyes a potential rematch against Republican Governor Joe Lombardo. Sisolak lost his re-election bid in 2022 to Lombardo, with many attributing his defeat to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic downturn in Nevada.

Sisolak, who was Nevada’s first Democratic governor in two decades, has been encouraged by supporters to run again and is currently weighing his options. He expressed disappointment in comments made by Lombardo regarding anti-Trump protests and emphasized that Democrats are not seeking handouts but opportunities.

The former governor is observing the legislative session over the next two months before making a decision on running in 2026. Meanwhile, Attorney General Aaron Ford has also expressed interest in running against Lombardo in the next election.

Despite facing an uphill battle against Lombardo, who holds a 53 percent approval rating, Sisolak and Ford are considering their options as they assess their chances in the upcoming election. A spokesperson for a pro-Lombardo PAC criticized Nevada Democrats, alleging failed policies and corruption.

While Sisolak has been involved in campaigns for Democrats and held a position at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, he is now focused on potentially running for governor again in 2026. The decision on who will challenge Lombardo will ultimately come down to Sisolak, Ford, and the political landscape in Nevada.
