Students at Scholars Academy in Queens were treated to a glimpse of the future of firefighting when the FDNY Robotics Unit brought a high-tech demonstration to their school. The demonstration showcased how technology can be used for good, with first responders using thermal drones to access hard-to-reach places and locate people in distress. Robot dogs were also showcased, demonstrating their ability to help with hazardous materials responses, building collapses, and emergencies underground.
Principal Michele Smyth expressed excitement about hosting the event and hoped to share the experience with other schools in the district. Educators at the Rockaway Park school, which focuses on STEM education, aimed to spark curiosity among students and inspire them to consider career opportunities in fields like robotics and engineering.
For members of the robotics and math clubs at the school, the demonstration provided a chance to see their passions put into action in an exciting way. Students were impressed by the real-life applications of the technology showcased and saw the potential for drones to be used in various situations.
