Premier League to Introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology
After successful trial runs, the Premier League is set to officially introduce semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) this weekend. SAOT has been used in major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and in other top leagues such as Serie A and La Liga.
SAOT is an AI system that enhances the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making by automating the process for VAR. This allows for quicker and more accurate offside calls, with 3D graphics for viewers to clearly see the decision.
Premier League stadiums now have up to 30 cameras mounted to provide SAOT with accurate, real-time images to determine offside decisions. This technology will help reduce delays in matches, as offside decisions can now be made in mere seconds. However, other decisions like penalties and red cards will still be made by officials, potentially causing longer delays.
The technology will officially debut in the Premier League during the Manchester City vs. Crystal Palace match on Saturday. Fans can expect quicker and more accurate offside decisions, thanks to the implementation of SAOT in the league.
