Nevada may soon offer Paid Family Medical Leave


A proposed bill in Nevada could provide paid family medical leave for residents, offering 12 weeks of paid time off for various life events. Assembly Bill 388, sponsored by Assemblymember Selena La Rue Hatch, aims to support families facing challenges like childbirth, caring for a sick family member, or recovering from illness. The bill would benefit about a million Nevadans and require larger companies and government agencies to provide paid leave.

Currently, only 4 percent of Nevada businesses with 50 or more employees offer paid family leave. The bill would ensure that employees making less than $1,200 per week receive 100 percent of their pay during their leave. Employees making more than that would receive 60 percent, capped at 150 percent of the state average weekly wage.

While the bill received support from Nevada workers, the state’s business community opposes it due to concerns about increased costs and economic uncertainty. Business representatives argue that the proposal would impose financial and operational burdens on companies and diminish competitiveness in Nevada.

If the bill is passed, the Office of the Labor Commissioner would enforce it, with penalties for violations. Employers would be responsible for managing paid family leave, although they could purchase insurance to cover these costs. Assemblymember La Rue Hatch believes that providing paid family medical leave is crucial to supporting workers during challenging life events without jeopardizing their financial stability.
