LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Senate Bill 80 is targeting unlicensed and illegal autobody shops in Nevada by proposing increased penalties for offenders. Nevada DMV Compliance Enforcement Division Chief JD Decker warns that car owners often unknowingly take their vehicles to shops that appear licensed but actually lack the required DMV license, leaving them at risk of vehicles being sold, parts being taken, or other dishonest activities.
Currently, illegal shops only face a misdemeanor citation and a fine, which may not be enough of a deterrent for those profiting from illicit operations. SB 80 seeks to increase fines and potentially send shop owners to jail for operating without a license, providing more stringent consequences for violators.
DMV has a list of properly licensed autobody shops, and Decker urges car owners to do their due diligence and ensure their chosen shop is legit before proceeding with repairs. The public can also report unlicensed repair shops to the DMV.
To combat illegal autobody shops and protect consumers, Nevada is taking steps to hold offenders accountable and safeguard the integrity of the autobody repair industry.
