Nevada Sports Net conducts weekly polls on Twitter and discusses the results on their NSN Tonight segment. This week’s poll asked about using public money for the proposed $1 billion GSR project, with 75 percent in favor. The project includes a $380 million arena where Wolf Pack men’s basketball would play. The project initially promised to be privately funded but later requested up to $89.7 million in public funds. Comparisons were made to other public-funded projects in the area, with the GSR requesting a lower percentage of public money than others. The use of tax-increment financing for the project, which is meant for “blighted areas,” raises legal questions as the GSR property is not considered blighted. A YouTube special further discussed the project and funding model. Columnist Chris Murray offers his thoughts on the project and funding model, questioning the use of public funds for a project in a redevelopment area.
