Commissioners show support for FAWG and acknowledge community volunteer efforts

At the Churchill County commissioners’ meeting on April 3, volunteer Matt Johnson was recognized for his efforts to improve the community by supporting local sports programs. Johnson’s daughters also contributed their time to help prepare the softball fields for opening day. In addition, the commissioners approved $3,000 in funding for the Fallon Animal Welfare Group (FAWG) to support their efforts in controlling the stray cat population through spaying, neutering, and medical treatment.

FAWG representative Charlie Arciniega emphasized the importance of community donations to fund the organization’s work. The commissioners also discussed and took action on various bills in the 2025 Nevada Legislature that could impact Churchill County. They supported bills related to mental health funding, local river cleanup, and county benefits proposed by the Nevada Association of Counties, but opposed bills like creating a Nevada Office of the Inspector General.

Other approved items included appointment of a new fire marshal, resignation of the county manager, funding for security equipment, zoning map amendments, and support for the Rural Residency Program at Banner Churchill Community Hospital. Livestreams and replays of Churchill County public meetings are available on YouTube.
