The Trump administration has canceled a Biden-era effort to prevent new oil leases in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains, despite little evidence suggesting oil potential in the area. President Trump’s Executive Order 14154 directed agencies to allow development of various energy sources, leading to the cancellation of protections for the Ruby Mountains. While some welcome the decision for economic reasons, U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto plans to reintroduce the Ruby Mountains Protection Act to permanently rule out oil and gas speculation in the area. Environmental advocates and local residents are concerned about the impact of potential drilling and mining in the region, particularly with the nearby Bald Mountain Mine expanding under the Biden administration. While the focus is currently on oil and gas production, some argue that gold mining poses a more imminent threat. Olivia Tanager of the Sierra Club’s Nevada chapter encourages others to view gold mining as a serious issue. Despite the push for development by the Trump administration, efforts to protect the Ruby Mountains continue, with residents and advocates expressing ongoing concerns about the impact on the environment and local economy.
