The Biden administration has announced that migrants who were temporarily allowed to live and work in the United States using the CBP One app have been told to leave the country immediately. More than 900,000 people were allowed entry under this program since January 2023, but now their paroles have been canceled by the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to secure the borders and protect national security. The migrants were urged to voluntarily self-deport using the renamed CBP Home app. This decision has affected individuals from Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico, among other countries.
The CBP One app was part of the Biden administration’s strategy to create legal pathways for entry into the United States and deter illegal border crossings. However, former President Donald Trump ended the program for new entrants on his first day in office, leaving many stranded in Mexico. Additionally, Trump has also revoked temporary status for many migrants who benefited from Biden’s policies, leading to what Homeland Security describes as the worst border crisis in U.S. history.
In addition to canceling paroles for CBP One beneficiaries, the Biden administration has also announced the revocation of parole for more than 500,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who flew to the U.S. at their own expense with a financial sponsor. The Trump administration also ended Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans and Haitians, although a federal judge has temporarily halted these decisions. TPS is granted to individuals already in the U.S. from countries facing unsafe conditions such as natural disasters or civil strife.
