In a bold move, top Nevada Assembly Democrat Steve Yeager has proposed a bill that would remove college degree requirements for most state government jobs and accept equivalent levels of work experience from the federal government. The bill, AB 547, aims to expand career opportunities for all Nevadans and provide job opportunities for former federal employees who were laid off during the Trump administration’s cuts.
Yeager emphasized the importance of not depriving Nevadans of job opportunities simply because they lack a college degree, especially in a time of high unemployment and economic instability. The legislation would allow hiring leaders to recognize relevant federal government employment as equivalent to state employment, with an exemption allowing for the requirement of a bachelor’s degree if necessary for the role.
AB 547 is modeled after similar executive orders in four other states and comes after Yeager and other Democratic caucus leaders called on Governor Joe Lombardo to consider hiring recently laid off federal workers to fill vacancies in the state. Lombardo and some Republican lawmakers dismissed the letter as politically motivated.
While a representative for Lombardo did not respond to a request for comment, this issue is still developing. Stay tuned for updates on this significant legislation that aims to promote economic stability and responsible governance in Nevada.
