Tracking the Cash: Unions and labor groups contributed $1.6 million to Nevada legislators

Unions and labor groups in Nevada donated over $1.6 million to legislators during the 2024 election cycle, making them the third highest contributing industry group. The majority of these donations went to Democrats, continuing a trend from previous election cycles. The record-breaking donations highlight the significant role of organized labor in shaping Nevada’s political landscape, particularly with endorsements and donations impacting the makeup of the Legislature.

The donations, which increased from the 2022 election cycle, followed a successful legislative session in 2023 for unions, with significant victories including pay increases for state employees. The ongoing legislative session includes key issues for labor groups, such as expanding paid family leave policies and the state’s film tax credit program.

The top union donors included the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Laborers’ International Union, and Unite Here. Democrats received the majority of union donations, with Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager receiving the most funding from the sector.

While unions represent different classes of workers with varying priorities, their interests often align, focusing on worker protections and prevailing wage requirements. The significant influence of unions in Nevada politics is evident in the donations made during the 2024 election cycle, emphasizing the importance of organized labor in shaping legislative decisions.
