State lawmakers have been hard at work in the education committees, discussing and voting on several important bills related to education in Nevada. Some of the key bills that were addressed include AB533, focusing on open enrollment policies; AB335, providing support for English language learners; and AB184, allowing students to play sports after transferring schools.
In addition, the State Board of Education has started the process of selecting a new state superintendent following the upcoming departure of Jhone Ebert to the Clark County schools. Former State Superintendent Steve Canavero has been appointed as an interim replacement, sparking some concerns about transparency and public input.
Furthermore, Sen. Angie Taylor has introduced SB444, a bill aiming to limit cellphone use in schools to reduce distractions and improve learning environments. The bill leaves it up to school districts to develop their own policies around electronic devices.
Meanwhile, the School Spotlight is on Henderson teacher Erica Wright, who is cultivating students’ passion for glass art at Green Valley High School, providing them with opportunities to showcase their work and attend art events. Wright hopes to inspire other art teachers to develop similar programs districtwide.
