Opinion: Nevada Becomes the Latest State to Safeguard Women’s Sports

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has approved a new policy that allows female athletes to participate in girls’ sports teams, while male athletes are not permitted. This decision comes after a story shared by Deanna Riddle highlighted the unfair advantage boys have when competing against girls in sports. The importance of protecting female sports was emphasized by UNR volleyball player Sia Liilii, who spoke out against male players competing in women’s sports. President Donald Trump’s executive order protecting women’s sports influenced the board’s decision.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Task Force to Protect Women’s Sports, chaired by Marshi Smith, played a crucial role in crafting this policy. The group took action and kept up public pressure, ultimately leading to the approval of the new policy. Young athletes also spoke out in support of protecting girls’ sports, highlighting the biological differences between boys and girls.

This victory for Nevada conservatives is significant, but there are concerns that it could be overturned in the future. Attorney General Aaron Ford and the ACLU may challenge the policy, making it essential to continue fighting to protect women’s sports. The overwhelming support for this policy demonstrates that the fight is winnable, but ongoing effort is necessary to ensure its enforcement. Contact Victor Joecks for more information on this issue.
