Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals scored in NHL history

Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals tied NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s career record of 894 goals on Friday with a goal against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Russian forward, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, has been a dominant offensive force throughout his career, holding multiple scoring records in addition to tying Gretzky’s milestone. Ovechkin, who is currently third in the NHL in goals scored this season, has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for leading the league in goals, and has been named NHL MVP three times. He also led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs’ most valuable player. Despite Washington’s recent playoff struggles, Ovechkin continues to perform at a high level and has the Capitals sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference and second overall in the NHL. At 39 years old, Ovechkin shows no signs of slowing down as he pursues more milestones and success with the Capitals, with his contract running through the 2025-26 season.
