UNLV’s new men’s basketball coach, Josh Pastner, has signed a backloaded five-year, $4.8 million contract with the school. Pastner, who previously coached at Memphis and Georgia Tech, will make $500,000 in the 2025-26 season before his salary rises to $1 million for the next two seasons and then to $1.15 million for the final two years of the contract. He also stands to earn $50,000 retention bonuses and a $30,000 signing bonus.
Pastner’s contract includes bonus opportunities such as winning the Mountain West regular-season title, conference tournaments, and NCAA Tournament success. He also receives benefits like a $10,000 automobile account, hosting account, 12 season tickets, and a suite for men’s basketball games.
The contract replaces former coach Kevin Kruger, who was fired after four seasons. Pastner’s salary is more in line with Mountain West norms after the school made football coach Dan Mullen the highest-paid coach in conference history.
UNLV’s athletics department faces a significant deficit, including a $21 million debt. Pastner’s contract details were obtained through a public-record request by Nevada Sports Net, signed by Pastner and athletic director Erick Harper.
Josh Pastner’s salary breakdown includes $250,000 base salary and additional compensation from media and public appearances for each season of the contract. He has a buyout clause starting at $3 million and decreasing each season. Overall, Pastner’s contract aims to incentivize success on the court and provide him with ample benefits and support during his tenure at UNLV.
