‘Snow White’ debuts with a successful $43 million at the box office

Despite high ambitions and a budget above $250 million, Disney’s live-action “Snow White” only brought in $43 million in ticket sales on its opening weekend. The film faced controversies surrounding the handling of the dwarfs, poor reviews, and backlash over comments made by star Rachel Zegler. It fell short of expectations and performed poorly compared to other live-action Disney remakes.

Overseas, the film added $44.3 million for a global launch of $87.3 million, well below initial estimates. The disappointing performance raises questions about Disney’s strategy of remaking their animated classics into live-action films. Despite facing little competition in the coming weeks, “Snow White” failed to impress audiences and critics.

Warner Bros. also experienced a misfire with the period gangster film “Alto Knights,” which opened with just $3.2 million. Another Warner Bros. film, “Mickey 17,” directed by Bong Joon Ho, also underperformed. The box office is down compared to previous years, adding to the disappointment-filled weekend for Hollywood.

Overall, the lackluster performance of “Snow White” and other films released this weekend highlights the challenges faced by the film industry in 2025. Despite efforts to modernize and adapt classic stories, not all remakes are met with success, indicating a need for Hollywood to reassess its approach to storytelling and audience engagement.
