Malaysia greenlights a fresh search for MH370 over a decade after its mysterious disappearance

The Malaysian government has approved a new search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared in 2014 with 239 people on board. The search will be conducted by Texas-based marine robotics company Ocean Infinity on a “no-find, no-fee” basis, with a payment of $70 million only if wreckage is found. The search will take place in a new 5,800-square-mile area in the southern Indian Ocean, where the plane is believed to have crashed.

Previous search efforts, including a multinational search and a private search by Ocean Infinity in 2018, failed to find any clues to the plane’s location. The approval for the new search comes three months after Malaysia gave initial approval for the plans.

Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Punkett has stated that the company has improved its technology since the last search and has narrowed down the search area based on expert analysis. The Malaysian Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, has confirmed that a contract will soon be signed with Ocean Infinity, and the search vessel is already on its way to the site. The search is expected to take place between January and April.

The Malaysian government has stated that they are committed to continuing the search operation to provide closure for the families of the passengers on Flight MH370.
