Georgia man receives 1-year sentence for stealing Arnold Palmer green jacket and Masters memorabilia

Richard Globensky, a former Georgia warehouse worker for the Augusta National Golf Club, received a one-year prison sentence for transporting stolen Masters tournament memorabilia, including Arnold Palmer’s iconic green jacket. He pleaded guilty to one count of transporting stolen goods across state lines, acknowledging his actions and expressing remorse in federal court in Chicago. He was also ordered to pay over $3 million in restitution and serve one year of supervised release.

Globensky collaborated with sellers in Florida who marketed the stolen items online, earning him over $5 million through a decade-long scheme. He provided cooperation in the investigation, leading to the recovery of some of the stolen goods in the Chicago area. Among the memorabilia stolen were tickets to Masters tournaments dating back to the 1930s, as well as T-shirts, mugs, and legendary green jackets won by famous golfers like Palmer, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen.

Globensky’s defense attorney emphasized that his client’s actions were opportunistic rather than malicious, as he took items set to be destroyed or unsold. The total financial loss to Augusta National exceeded $3 million due to his activities. The golf club expressed disappointment in Globensky’s betrayal of trust and his disregard for the impact on the club, tournament, and golf legends.

Globensky funded a lavish lifestyle with the stolen money, including vehicles, vacations, and luxury items. His case underscores the security measures surrounding the Masters tournament’s exclusive merchandise, particularly the coveted green jackets. Augusta National, which hosts the annual golf tournament in April, suffered significant financial and reputational damage due to the scheme.
