New Nevada bill proposes daily cleaning requirement for most hotel rooms

A new bill, Senate Bill 360, also known as the Hotel Safety Act, has been introduced in the Nevada state Senate by Sen. Lori Rogich. The bill requires hotels with over 200 rooms in Clark and Washoe counties to provide daily room cleanings. The Culinary Union, representing thousands of workers in Nevada, has voiced their support for the bill, emphasizing the importance of health and safety for guest room attendants.

The legislation mandates that the state Board of Health implement regulations ensuring that each occupied guest room is visually inspected by a room attendant every second consecutive day to guarantee the safety of guests and the public. Guests can choose to opt out of daily room cleaning by notifying the hotel either verbally, in writing, or by using a “do not disturb” or “privacy” marker on their door. Hotels must maintain written documentation of guests who opt out for at least three years.

The bill comes in response to changes in the industry following the COVID-19 pandemic. Five years ago, daily room cleaning became mandatory during the pandemic closures, but as the virus weakened by 2023, some hotels reduced cleaning frequencies, leading to concerns about employee layoffs. The new bill aims to ensure the continued safety and well-being of guests and employees in Nevada hotels.
