The number of celebrities being exempted from military service due to long waits for mental illness diagnosis has been steadily increasing, raising concerns of intentional manipulation of the system. According to data from the Military Manpower Administration, 18.38% of social service personnel called up last year were exempted after waiting for over three years due to mental illness. This trend is particularly prominent among celebrities, with 43.1% of those exempted falling into this category.
These individuals, who were not initially diagnosed with mental illness in the first military service examination, were exempted after being diagnosed in a re-test following a prolonged waiting period. The number of celebrities exempted in this manner has skyrocketed from 7 in 2020 to 50 in 2024, indicating a potential abuse of the system.
In response to these concerns, Representative Kang called for stricter investigation and objective verification by the Military Manpower Administration to ensure the integrity of the system. The exemption of individuals from military service after extended waits due to mental illness continues to rise, highlighting the need for increased transparency and fairness in the fulfillment of military service obligations.
