A coalition of Democratic-led states, including Nevada, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s layoffs in the Education Department. The lawsuit alleges that the layoffs are illegal and will severely impair the department’s ability to function, resulting in a loss or delay of federal money for public schools, and leaving the agency unable to administer college financial aid or enforce civil rights laws at schools. Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford, a former public school math teacher, called the plan unconstitutional, illegal, and reckless, stating that it will harm Nevada’s students, especially those who rely on special education services or come from low-income families.
The Education Department has defended the layoffs, stating that it will still fulfill its statutory obligations despite the cuts. However, the lawsuit argues that only Congress has the power to close the department or dismantle its core work. New York Attorney General Letitia James has also joined the legal action, stating that the cuts will impair necessary services for students and families.
President Trump has previously expressed a desire to shut down the Education Department, calling it wasteful and overly influenced by liberal thinking. The lawsuit seeks to stop the layoffs and protect the education services that students depend on. This legal action highlights the ongoing debate over the future and funding of education in the United States.
