Hungary managed to remove three Russian individuals from the EU sanctions list, renewing friendly ties with Moscow. Budapest initially requested nine individuals be delisted, including Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman, but eventually settled on removing three. These individuals are Russian sports minister Mikhail Degtyarev, Gulbakhor Ismailova, and businessman Viatcheslav Moshe Kantor. A fourth individual, businessman Vladimir Rashevsky, was excluded due to a weak legal case rather than pressure from Budapest. Three others were left off the list as they have passed away. EU sanctions must be renewed every six months through a unanimous vote by member states’ ambassadors. With the deadline imminent, the list has been extended until September 15th. This comes as there are over 2,400 individuals and entities on the EU’s Russia sanctions list. Hungary’s actions have been seen as a compromise between maintaining friendly relations with Moscow and upholding the EU’s collective sanctions against Russia. Their successful removal of three individuals demonstrates their influence within the EU and their willingness to negotiate for their own interests. This move could potentially impact future diplomatic relations between Hungary, Russia, and the EU.
