“Reba’s Law” Proposed to Strengthen Nevada’s Animal Cruelty Penalties by Lawmakers

Nevada lawmakers have introduced a bill, known as “Reba’s Law,” that aims to strengthen animal cruelty laws in the state. Under current legislation, a first offense of animal cruelty is considered a category D felony, carrying a sentence of one to four years in prison. The proposed bill, AB 381, would upgrade certain acts of cruelty to animals to a category B felony if the animal dies or if the acts are intended to threaten or intimidate someone, potentially resulting in a ten-year prison sentence.

Furthermore, the bill would also increase penalties for those who torture or abuse police animals. Nevada Paws the Link has been a driving force behind the push for tougher animal cruelty laws in response to the death of Reba, an English bulldog found dead in a sealed container in Las Vegas. Two individuals have been charged in connection with the case, but were only facing a category D felony. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson has called for stricter penalties, emphasizing the importance of aligning punishment with the severity of the crime.
