A bipartisan group of Nevada lawmakers has proposed adding lacrosse as a state-sanctioned sport in the state. Currently, several club teams playing lacrosse are affiliated with schools in the Las Vegas and Reno areas.
If passed, SB 305 would allow the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) to develop regulations for official lacrosse programs at Nevada high schools. This would include creating competition rules and determining the length of the season.
Furthermore, the bill would establish a Pipeline Infrastructure Fund to support sports participation. The fund would gather gifts, grants, and donations to provide resources, hiring, and wrap-around services for schools involved in the lacrosse program.
NIAA, a non-profit organization that oversees all high school athletics in Nevada, currently does not receive any state funding. The addition of lacrosse as a state-sanctioned sport would not only provide more opportunities for student-athletes but also create an avenue for additional funding and support for schools participating in the program.
The proposal has garnered bipartisan support, and if passed, it could potentially expand the sports offerings in Nevada high schools, providing students with more opportunities for physical activity and competition.
