The Attorney General’s office has announced that 20 people have been charged in connection to a prison brawl at the Ely State Prison that left three inmates dead and five others injured last summer. The final arrest was made on March 5, and the defendants face charges including first-degree murder and attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon to promote a criminal gang. AG Aaron Ford stated that those responsible will be held accountable, emphasizing that violence within the correctional system will be met with the full force of the law.
The incident occurred on July 30, 2024, and is being investigated by the White Pine County Sheriff’s Office. One of the suspects, Andrew Emerich, who was arrested in January in connection to the inmate deaths, had been released from Ely State Prison in October for previous charges. The prison was placed on lockdown following the brawl, resulting in three deaths and multiple injuries. Emerich is facing charges including attempted murder, battery by a prisoner, possession of a dangerous weapon, and a gang enhancement charge.
