Pittsburgh Student Goes Missing on Spring Break Trip to Dominican Republic

University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki disappeared during a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic, prompting an international search effort. The 20-year-old was visiting Punta Cana with a group of friends when she went missing between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Thursday. While she wasn’t reported missing until later that night, Dominican authorities had apparently been made aware of her disappearance earlier. Konanki’s family, based in Virginia, contacted the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office to report her missing.

Konanki was traveling with five other University of Pittsburgh students, who stayed in the Dominican Republic to assist in the search efforts. Authorities are examining various possibilities, from accidental incidents to foul play, and are working closely with Dominican authorities, the FBI, and the Indian Embassy as Konanki is also a citizen of India. Video footage, cellphone evidence, and interviews with those who were with Konanki are top priorities for investigators.

Defensa Civil La Altagracia, the local Dominican emergency operations agency, has deployed multiple search teams by land and sea. The University of Pittsburgh is offering its support to Konanki’s family and the authorities involved in the search. The Dominican Republic, where Konanki disappeared, is known for its violent crime, prompting travelers to exercise caution.

Sheriff Michael Chapman of Loudoun County remains hopeful for a positive outcome but acknowledges the uncertainty of the situation. As the search for Konanki continues, various agencies and individuals are working together to locate the missing student and ensure her safe return.
