Pope expresses gratitude to volunteers for their ‘miracle of tenderness’ as another Holy Year event goes by without his presence

Pope Francis issued a message thanking volunteers for their care and tenderness towards the sick as he continued his recovery from double pneumonia. Doctors reported a gradual improvement in his condition after more than three weeks in the hospital. The 88-year-old pope did not appear for his weekly blessing for the fourth Sunday in a row, but he met with his deputies and the Vatican distributed the text he would have delivered.

Francis expressed gratitude for the doctors and healthcare workers caring for him and others who are experiencing pain and sickness. He highlighted the importance of the “miracle of tenderness” in bringing light to those in adversity. Despite his absence, the Vatican’s operations continued, and celebrations for the Holy Year Jubilee proceeded.

The doctors reported that Francis remained stable with good oxygen levels and no fever, indicating a positive response to treatment. However, they maintained a guarded prognosis, recognizing that he is still in danger. Despite his condition, Francis continues to govern the Catholic Church, with his officials visiting him regularly to conduct essential work.

Francis has been using supplemental oxygen during the day and a noninvasive ventilation mask at night to aid his breathing. Initially hospitalized for bronchitis, his condition progressed into a complex respiratory infection and double pneumonia. His extended hospitalization has raised questions about the future of his papacy.
