Nevada’s State Worker Vacancy Rate Cut in Half with Pay Raise and Hiring Shifts


Governor Joe Lombardo of Nevada has successfully reduced the state government’s vacancy rate since taking office more than two years ago. Lombardo initiated changes in hiring practices, including eliminating certain employment qualifications and granting more hiring authority to individual state agencies. The state’s total vacancy rate has decreased by roughly half, and retention bonuses, as well as the largest pay raise for state employees in decades, have been approved.

While improvements have been made, challenges remain in hiring for hard-to-fill positions in rural areas and agencies like the Nevada State Police. Lombardo is focused on making state employment more attractive, with efforts to simplify the hiring process.

Despite progress, there are still areas with high vacancy rates, such as the Division of Child and Family Services within the Department of Health and Human Services. Additionally, the Nevada State Police is struggling with high retirement contribution rates affecting take-home pay and creating hiring challenges.

Future changes are expected, including consolidating job titles to streamline hiring processes and make the state’s employment system more efficient.
