Global movement of women rallies for end to violence and inequality | Women News


Demonstrations from Buenos Aires to Lagos demand justice for victims of femicide and urge reforms to protect women on International Women’s Day. Protesters across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas rallied against gender-based violence and inequality.

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, demonstrators highlighted the alarming rate of women being murdered and condemned President Javier Milei’s austerity plans that they say will harm women. Milei’s government has closed the Ministry of Women, Genders, and Diversity and plans to remove “femicide” from the penal code, sparking outrage.

In Ecuador, women marched in Quito demanding justice for victims of gender-based violence and condemning the patriarchal system. In Bolivia, protesters denounced impunity in femicides, with few cases resulting in convictions.

In Europe, activists advocated for better healthcare, equal pay, and an end to violence against women. In Poland, a centre offering medical abortions was opened in Warsaw in defiance of the country’s strict abortion laws. In Madrid, Spain, protesters demanded justice for Gisele Pelicot, a symbol of the fight against sexual violence in Europe.

In Nigeria, women celebrated their womanhood in Lagos, dressed in purple, the color of the women’s liberation movement. In Russia, women were presented with yellow tulips by honor guard soldiers in St. Petersburg. In Ukraine, a ceremony honored female soldiers who died fighting Russia’s invasion.

The global demonstrations on International Women’s Day highlighted the ongoing fight for gender equality and justice for women worldwide.
