Violent clashes in Syria’s Alawite stronghold have left dozens dead as security forces battle gunmen loyal to deposed President Bashar al-Assad. The fighting in Latakia, a coastal region, has led to over 70 casualties, including security forces, gunmen, and civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The city was secured on Friday, although clashes continued elsewhere, prompting the government to send reinforcements to restore order.
The violence has disrupted President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s efforts to stabilize the country and navigate challenges such as US sanctions and security threats, particularly from Israel. While the Turkish government has warned against provocations in Latakia, Alawite activists have reported ongoing violence and attacks in the region since al-Assad’s fall.
In response to the unrest, the Alawite Islamic Council has called for UN protection for the coastal region, blaming the government for sending military convoys to terrorize and kill Syrians. The Alawite community, once prominent under al-Assad’s rule, has not yet had significant meetings with the new government, raising concerns about inclusivity within the administration.
As the violence escalates and threatens peace, leaders in Syria are struggling to address the unrest and maintain control. The situation in Latakia remains tense, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing the country in the aftermath of al-Assad’s regime.
