Nevada Democratic leaders are urging the governor to hire federal employees who were dismissed.

Nevada state Democratic leaders are urging Governor Joe Lombardo to hire recently fired federal workers in an effort to combat the state’s high unemployment rate. The leaders, including House Speaker Steve Yeager and Majority Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui, expressed concern over the mass layoffs of federal employees by President Trump and Elon Musk, stating that it puts Nevadans at risk and takes away critical services. They believe that integrating these fired workers into open state government positions would help lower the state’s unemployment rate.

The letter from the Democrats mentioned that other governors in states such as Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico have taken similar actions to assist fired federal workers in finding employment. They are calling on Lombardo to follow suit and present plans of action to the state Assembly leadership by March 18.

In response, Lombardo’s press office stated that federal employees in transition can apply for state government jobs and emphasized that state employment is a priority for the governor. The press office criticized the Democratic leaders for grandstanding and urged them to focus on passing legislation to benefit Nevada instead.

This initiative by the Nevada state Democrats aims to address the economic challenges faced by the state’s population and provide opportunities for recently fired federal workers to contribute their experience and expertise to the state government.
