Nevada Assembly leaders provide support to federal workers facing layoffs

Nevada Assembly Democrats are urging Governor Joe Lombardo to consider hiring state employees from the pool of federal workers who have been laid off during the Trump administration. In a letter signed by Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager, Speaker Pro-Tempore Daniele Monroe-Moreno, and Majority Floor Leader Sandra Jauregui, they highlight the high unemployment rate in Nevada and suggest that hiring these idled public sector employees could help reduce unemployment and maintain essential public services.

The letter comes in response to recent federal office closures and layoffs in Nevada, including probationary employees managing public lands and water as well as General Services Administration workers. Democratic governors in other states have streamlined their recruitment processes to hire laid-off federal workers, and Nevada Democrats believe the state could benefit from the experience and expertise of these individuals.

In a response to the letter, Lombardo’s office emphasized the governor’s focus on updating the state workforce and encouraging federal employees in transition to apply for state employment. The administration highlighted efforts to reduce the state’s vacancy rate and modernize the hiring process.

While some in the Legislature believe the letter is unnecessary political drama, Assembly Democrats are requesting a detailed plan from the Lombardo administration by March 18. Meanwhile, Nevada departments hosted a spring hiring fair showcasing job openings in various sectors.
