Mother accused of abducting teen 7 years ago has been found safe in Colorado

Abdul Aziz Khan, a teenager allegedly abducted by his mother seven years ago in Atlanta, was found alive in Colorado after his mother was spotted breaking into a house. Douglas County sheriff’s deputies found Abdul in a car outside a home in Highlands Ranch on February 23. The case had gone cold after federal authorities spent five years searching for him across 11 states. Rabia Khalid and Elliot Bourgeois were arrested for trespassing, but Khalid was found to have a kidnapping warrant in Louisiana.

Khalid was charged with conspiracy to kidnap and Bourgeois with kidnapping and other crimes. Their relationship is unclear. Abdul was kidnapped after a custody dispute involving criminal allegations against his father, which were later dismissed. Abdul seemed coached when approached by deputies, possibly unaware he was kidnapped. Both he and another child in the car appeared healthy and were taken into protective custody.

Abdul’s reunification with his family is ongoing. The family released a statement expressing their overwhelming happiness at Abdul’s return and gratitude for the support they have received over the years. Details about the custody dispute and the nature of Abdul’s relationship with his captors are still unclear. The public defender’s office representing Khalid did not provide immediate comment. Bourgeois’ legal representation was also unclear. The sheriff emphasized the importance of the ongoing process of reuniting Abdul with his family and ensuring his well-being after the long period of abduction.
