The Republican-controlled House voted to censure Rep. Al Green for disrupting President Trump’s address to Congress. Green, an outspoken progressive, has previously introduced resolutions to impeach Trump. The censure was introduced by Rep. Dan Newhouse and 10 Democrats joined Republicans in voting for it. Green will need to stand in the House chamber while the censure resolution is read to him. A censure is a formal way for the House to express disapproval of a member’s conduct and does not result in losing any privileges. Green disrupted Trump’s speech by shouting that he had no mandate to cut Medicaid, prompting Republicans to jeer and call for him to sit down. Speaker Mike Johnson gave warnings before instructing the sergeant-at-arms to remove Green from the chamber. Green, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, defended his actions by stating that he was speaking from his heart about people suffering due to potential Medicaid cuts. He expressed willingness to suffer the consequences and stated that he would do it again. The last House member to be censured was former Rep. Jamaal Bowman for pulling a fire alarm in a Capitol building without an emergency.
