A bill introduced in the Nevada Legislature aims to restrict the speed of watercraft on Lake Tahoe near the shoreline. Senate Bill 106 would make it a misdemeanor to operate a vessel within a 600-foot no-wake zone and limit speeds to 5 nautical miles. Sponsored by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), the bill is intended to enhance public safety and bring Nevada state law in line with TRPA’s updated shoreline regulations. TRPA Executive Director Julie Regan highlighted the need for consistency to avoid confusion among the public about safe recreation on the lake. According to Scott Lingren, the chief of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, busy holiday periods often witness violations of boating regulations, particularly by rental boats and jet skis. The implementation of the no wake zone is expected to reduce conflicts among different users of Lake Tahoe’s waters, including boaters and swimmers.
