Pope Recuperating with Ventilation Mask After Battling Pneumonia

Pope Francis is currently hospitalized and undergoing treatment for double pneumonia, exacerbated by his chronic lung disease. Despite experiencing respiratory crises, the 88-year-old pontiff is stable but still in danger. He has been wearing a ventilation mask at night to assist with breathing. His hospitalization, which began on February 14, is the longest of his papacy. As Lent begins, a cardinal has been designated to take his place at Vatican celebrations. Francis was supposed to attend a spiritual retreat, but it will go ahead without him, focusing on the theme of “Hope in eternal life.”

The pope’s health issues highlight the delicate balance between medical treatment and ethical considerations in Catholic teaching. Francis, who is overweight and not very active, has been undergoing respiratory physiotherapy to improve his lung function. Noninvasive ventilation has been used to help him breathe, without the need for intubation. It is unclear if he has provided any instructions regarding his care in the event of a decline in health.

Catholic teaching emphasizes the importance of defending life from conception to natural death, but allows for the suspension of “extraordinary” care that may only prolong suffering. As Pope Francis continues to receive treatment, the Vatican and Catholics around the world are praying for his recovery.
