Nevada politician convicted of misappropriating $70,000 intended for slain officer statue for personal expenses

Former Nevada Republican politician Michele Fiore was found guilty of misusing funds raised for a statue honoring a slain police officer for personal expenses, including plastic surgery. She was convicted of six counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, each carrying a possible 20-year prison sentence. Fiore, who had previously run for state treasurer, will be sentenced on January 6th and plans to appeal the conviction. Federal prosecutors stated that she had raised over $70,000 for the statue but used the money for personal reasons.

The former Las Vegas city councilwoman and state lawmaker was accused of exploiting a tragedy to benefit herself, with FBI agents investigating her campaign spending in 2021. Fiore, who currently serves as a justice of the peace in Pahrump, Nevada, was appointed as a judge in Nye County in 2022. Despite not having a law degree, she has held various elected positions in the state and gained attention for posing with guns in family Christmas cards. The 54-year-old’s actions have drawn criticism, and she is now facing the consequences of her fraudulent behavior. Her attorney plans to challenge the conviction as Fiore continues her legal battle.
