Legendary Nevada diving coach Jian Li You recently announced her retirement, prompting a reflection on the top coaches in Wolf Pack history. A list of the top 12 coaches was compiled based on their accomplishments during their time at Nevada.
Among the notable coaches mentioned were Mike Anderson, who led the women’s swimming team to five conference titles and coached four Olympians; Jimmy Olivas, who coached the boxing team to five national titles; and Michelle Gardner, who started the softball program from scratch and led the team to two NCAA Regional appearances.
Other standout coaches included Mark Fox, who led the men’s basketball team to five league titles; Devin Scruggs, who led the volleyball team to five NCAA Tournament berths; and Eric Musselman, who turned around the men’s basketball team, winning four conference titles in four seasons.
However, the top spot on the list went to Chris Ault, the only Wolf Pack coach to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Ault’s impact on Nevada athletics was unmatched, leading the football team to 10 league titles and building the program from Division II to a national powerhouse.
As the Wolf Pack bids farewell to a coaching legend in Jian Li You, it is also a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the top coaches in Nevada’s history, who have left a lasting legacy on the university’s athletic program.
